Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned… especially when you’re fending off The Attack of the 50-Foot Woman! One of the most beloved camp classics of the 1950s begins with a three-way recipe for sci-fi disaster: Cheating husband Harry (William Hudson) is married to alcoholic heiress Nancy (Allison Hayes), but he’s got a scheming mistress named Honey (Yvette Vickers) and a burning desire for Nancy’s lavish inheritance. As often happened with cheesy sci-fi and horror films of the Eisenhower era, the movie’s deliriously exploitative poster promised more than the movie actually delivers, which perhaps explains why director Nathan Juran (whose next film was the comparatively lavish The 7th Voyage of Sinbad) opted to be credited as “Nathan Hertz.” And while the special effects are cheesy and cheap (involving oversized miniatures, repeated process shots, see-through double-exposures, and a giant, rubbery arm used for King Kong-like clutching scenes), it’s still possible to feel a hint of compassion for poor ol’ Nancy, and that–along with the enjoyable performances of Hayes, Hudson, and Vickers–is probably why Attack has gained such a loyal cult following over the decades. Fueled by atomic-age paranoia and timeless human foibles, it’s a feminist revenge thriller with lasting appeal, remade in 1993 with better special effects and Daryl Hannah in the title role. –Jeff Shannon

French filmmaker Claude Lelouch continues to take critical heat for this 1966 international hit, which has been labeled “schmaltzy” and dismissed as overly stylized for its simple story line. While it certainly can’t be mistaken for a masterpiece of the French New Wave (Lelouch was left in the dust that year by such wonders as Jean-Luc Godard’s Masculin Feminin), A Man and a Woman has a jumpy impressionism that engages a viewer precisely because it cuts against conventional expectations of romance. Starring Anouk Aimée as a widowed “script girl” (working in film production) and Jean-Louis Trintignant as a racer who lost his wife to suicide, the film is really an objective sampling–almost a study–of moments between the time the two characters meet and the point at which they begin to read each other intuitively. Generous flashbacks fill in details on the pair’s woeful, recent histories, while endless documentary-like glimpses of Aimée’s and Trintignant’s characters at work in their highly charged professions become a visual engine for the days passing between measured developments in love. Lelouch is more dryly humane than lush in his approach, though the film strains once in a while for a forced naturalism that can actually be more narcissistic than the most obvious romantic contrivance. Still, A Man and a Woman–in the best sense–is also a movie in love with itself, with its own ability to evoke and conjure and construct dozens of different ways of tracking a relationship in progress. If Lelouch doesn’t exactly push open the boundaries of cinema as several of his filmmaking peers did at the time, he certainly enjoys what he’s doing. –Tom Keogh

This is not a movie to see on an empty stomach. “In your satin tights / Fighting for your rights / And the old Red, White, and Blue!… / Wonder Woman!” Could anyone who grew up in the ’70s ever forget that super-catchy theme song? Originally packaged as the female version of the Batman TV show (producer Stanley Ralph Ross penned 32 of the caped crusader’s episodes), Wonder Woman ended up redefining the campy, comic book genre. Looking back on it now, it is easy to see the attraction of this unique show that oozed ’70s culture, but was set in the 1940s. Drawing on the same New Age-y sound and propulsive energy as that show’s solo-voice and choral numbers, the live concert features four attractive young women in strapless evening gowns with soaring voices backed by an orchestra, an Anuna-like chorus, and a large percussion section. The more traditional fare includes Méav Ni Mhaolchatha’s “Danny Boy” and “She Moved Through the Fair,” and Chloë Agnew’s “Ave Maria” (the Bach-Gounod version). Movie and TV selections range from Agnew’s “Walking in the Air” (The Snowman) and “Someday” (Disney’s Hunchback of Notre Dame) to Lisa Kelly’s “May It Be” (the Enya song from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the King) and Órla Fallon’s voice and harp rendition of “Harry’s Game.” A fifth woman, Máiréad Nesbitt, adds some variety by fiddling “The Butterfly” and “Ashokan Farewell” (best known as the theme from Ken Burns’s The Civil War).
