Product Description
Cindy Sherman’s Untitled Film Stills, a series of 69 black-and-white photographs created between 1977 and 1980, is widely seen as one of the most original and influential achievements in recent art. Witty, provocative and searching, this lively catalogue of female roles inspired by the movies crystallizes widespread concerns in our culture, examining the ways we shape our personal identities and the role of the mass media in our lives. ~Sherman began making these pictures in 1977 when she was 23 years old. The first six were an experiment: fan-magazine glimpses into the life (or roles) of an imaginary blond actress, played by Sherman herself. The photographs look like movie stills–or perhaps publicity pix–purporting to catch the blond bombshell in unguarded moments at home. The protagonist is shown preening in the kitchen and lounging in the bedroom. Onto something big, Sherman tried other characters in other roles: the chic starlet at her seaside hideaway, the luscious librarian, the domesticated sex kitten, the hot-blooded woman of the people, the ice-cold sophisticate and a can-can line of other stereotypes. She eventually completed the series in 1980. She stopped, she has explained, when she ran out of clichés.~Other artists had drawn upon popular culture but Sherman’s strategy was new. For her the pop-culture image was not a subject (as it had been for Walker Evans) or raw material (as it had been for Andy Warhol) but a whole artistic vocabulary, ready-made. Her film stills look and function just like the real ones–those 8 x 10 glossies designed to lure us into a drama we find all the more compelling because we know it isn’t real. In the Untitled Film Stills there are no Cleopatras, no ladies on trains, no women of a certain age. There are, of course, no men. The 69 solitary heroines map a particular constellation of fictional femininity that took hold in postwar America–the period of Sherman’s youth and the starting point for our contemporary mythology. In finding a form for her own sensibility, Sherman touched a sensitive nerve in the culture at large. Although most of the characters are invented, we sense right away that we already know them. That twinge of instant recognition is what makes the series tick and it arises from Cindy Sherman’s uncanny poise. There is no wink at the viewer, no open irony, no camp.~In 1995, The Museum of Modern Art purchased the series from the artist, preserving the work in its entirety. This book marks the first time that the complete series will be published as a unified work, with Sherman herself arranging the pictures in sequence. She’s good enough to be a real actress. –Andy Warhol~The still must tease with the promise of a story the viewer of it itches to be told. –Arthur Danto Essays by Peter Galassi and Cindy Sherman.
Product Description

A nine-and-a-half-hour documentary on the Nazi extermination camps, Shoah (the Hebrew word for “Holocaust”) was internationally hailed as a masterpiece upon its release in 1985. Shunning any re-creation, archival footage, or visual documentation of the events, filmmaker Claude Lanzmann relied on the words of witnesses—Jewish, Polish, and German—to describe in ruthless detail the bureaucratic machinery of the Final Solution, so that the remote experiences of the Holocaust became fresh and immediate. This book presents in an accessible and vivid format the testimony of survivors, participants, witnesses, and scholars. This tenth anniversary edition, published on the fiftieth anniversary of the liberation of the camps, is newly revised and corrected in order to more accurately present the actual testimony of those interviewed. Shoah is an unparalleled oral history of the Holocaust, an intensely readable journey through the twentieth century’s greatest horror.

Product Description

From the first published movie review in the late 1800s to the 21st-century era of the “great movie critics’ wake,” this chronicle reviews the nature, scope, and controversies in American film criticism. Moving through the Silent Era, the pre- and post-war years, the golden age of the 1970s, and the eventual decline of the 1980s and 1990s, this exhaustive overview includes biographical information on some of the most influential film critics—including Leonard Maltin, Roger Ebert, Pauline Kael, and James Agee—as well as a historical record and critical assessment of their work. Illuminating various past controversies, this invaluable reference documents the battles between auteur theorists and their opposing critics as well as between the critics and studios, filmmakers, and even themselves. Little-known aspects of film criticism lore are also related, such as the epic battles waged in print by Pauline Kael and Andrew Sarris, the studio boycotts of the New York Times and New York Herald Tribune over unflattering press, and the critics barred from attending premieres by studios for writing “negative” reviews. Honoring those who shed light on the artistic visions and storytelling sensibilities that have graced the big screen, this authoritative guide is a must-have for industry professionals, film historians, and movie buffs.

Description
Megalomaniacs. Spies. Thieves. Phantoms. Mad scientists. The world is full of dangerous people. But don’t fear — Wonder Woman is here! Lynda Carter returns as Wonder Woman for all 24 episodes of the third and final thrill-packed season of the series. Teamed with flint-jawed government agent Steve Trevor (Lyle Waggoner) and using the alias of Diana Prince, Wonder Woman whips out her bracelets and lariat to battle evil. And what a battle it is. Her foes include a time traveler from the year 2155, a brain with no body, a dating service that’s serving up death, bazillions of hungry ants and a sculptor whose statues come to life and become his partners in crime. Wonder Woman saved the best adventures for last!
DVD Features:Audio Commentary:By Lynda Carter on “My Teenage Idol is Missing” – Disc 1.Featurette:“Wonder Woman: The Ultimate Feminist Icon” — A featurette on Wonder Woman’s influence as a female role model – includes interviews w/ Lynda Carter “Wonder Woman”; Dawn Heinecken, Author of “The Women Warriors of Television”; Nina Jaffe, Author of Wonder Woman children’s books; Karen Berger- VP/Executive Editor Vertigo and Wonder Woman Editor 1986-1991; Lillian Robinson, Author of “Wonder Women: Feminisms and Superheroes” (DISC 4)

Amazon.com
The Amazon princess returns once again for the third and final season of the wonderfully dated, iconic super series Wonder Woman. These final 24 episodes are the epitome of late-’70s television: high in camp, filled with semi-famous special guest stars, riddled with sexual innuendos, and a showcase for all the trends of the time. This time around Wonder Woman must face, and stop, mind-controlling music in “Disco Devil” (with special guest star Wolfman Jack). On “Skateboard Wiz,” Wonder Woman teams up with a skateboarding teen to uncover an illegal gambling ring. Capitalizing on the roller coaster craze, the series finale “The Phantom of the Roller Coater Parts 1 & 2″ (with special guest star Ike Eisenmann) has our hero battling surveillance planting spies in the tunnels beneath the “Fun Universe” amusement park. But all kidding aside, Wonder Women still stands the test of time as one of the best comic book television series ever. Its legendary status can be easily be attributed to Lynda Carter and her perfect performance as the beautiful, powerful, and patriotic Amazonian princess. –Rob Bracco

Description
Meet the United States’ secret and most beautiful weapon in the fight against tyranny: Wonder Woman! Season One of Wonder Woman (the Pilot Movie and 13 regular episodes) retains the World War II era of the super heroine’s early comic book adventures. Also captured is the exuberant tone of a comic book come to screen life as the warrior princess, empowered by her sense of a woman’s worth and by the mysterious substance Feminum that’s found only on her remote native isle, battles a succession of Nazi baddies. Former Miss USA Lynda Carter stars as the heroine who hides her identity behind the oversized glasses of a War Department functionary. But when duty and danger call, she transforms. And the wonders never cease.Amazon.com
“In your satin tights / Fighting for your rights / And the old Red, White, and Blue!… / Wonder Woman!” Could anyone who grew up in the ’70s ever forget that super-catchy theme song? Originally packaged as the female version of the Batman TV show (producer Stanley Ralph Ross penned 32 of the caped crusader’s episodes), Wonder Woman ended up redefining the campy, comic book genre. The primetime show immediately became a social and cultural phenomenon, attracting a wide audience that continued to tune in to America’s favorite socially progressive superheroine.

Looking back on it now, it is easy to see the attraction of this unique show that oozed ’70s culture, but was set in the 1940s. While trying to stop a Nazi plane from reaching the U.S., Major Steve Trevor (Lyle Waggoner) is shot down, landing on mythical Paradise Island. The uncharted island is the hidden home to the lost tribe of eternally young Amazon women. The Amazons take in the Major and nurse him back to health. During his recovery he attracts the sympathy and interest of Princess Diana (Lynda Carter, former Miss USA 1973) who is intrigued by the man from the mainland and his tales of the evil Nazis. She decides she must follow the Major back to the U.S. and join the forces of good against the tyranny of evil. So begins the saga of the beautiful Amazon Wonder Woman, armed with super strength, bulletproof bracelets, and the unbreakable, “truth-telling,” golden lasso. What sets season 1 apart from the two subsequent seasons is that the pilot and each of the 13 episodes take place during World War II, corresponding to the original comic stories. In this season we see Wonder Woman battle spies, uncover Fausta the Nazi Wonder Woman, stop thieves trying to steal the secret substance of Amazonian power (Feminum), wrestle a Nazi-trained circus gorilla, and rescue an interplanetary visitor held captive by the Third Reich–all of which are priceless.

Included with the pilot episode is an extremely fun commentary track by Lynda Carter and producer Douglas C. Kramer. Also added on the DVD set is the making-of featurette “Beauty, Brawn and Bulletproof Bracelets.” Yes, it is very campy, cheesy, dated, and filled with double entendres and subtle innuendos. But below the surface, there is something special that makes the show timeless and a pleasure to watch. Calling Wonder Woman: The Complete First Season a time capsule would be an understatement. But a time capsule in the most wonderful sense of the phrase. –Rob Bracco

Product Description
When four strong, sassy and sexy Southern women running a fledgling interior decorating firm hit the television airwaves as Designing Women in 1986, they brought a new kind of Southern spirit to American television. Smart, ambitious and outspoken they embodied the new Southern woman. The much-married, alimony-rich beauty queen Suzanne Sugarbaker (Delta Burke) uses her feminine wiles to attract business for the firm – and future ex-husbands for herself. Her sophisticated sister, Julia (Dixie Carter), is nobodys fool and runs the operation and her own life with a guarded graciousness. Mary Jo Shively (Annie Potts) is the sweet-natured, recently-divorced mother trying to make her own way in the world as a decorator for the first time. Small-town gal Charlene Frazier (Jean Smart) is the naïve, overly-trusting bad-guy magnet who runs the office. They are all devoted to the business. They are each devoted to the other. Designing Women was a gift to American television that ran for seven seasons and continues winning fans to this day in reruns all around the world. All 21 episodes from Season 1 finally arrive on DVD.

Bonus Feature:

* Designing Women: A Reunion sponsored by The Paley Center for Media in 2006.
Amazon.com
The mark of a great sitcom is whether the jokes and tone stand up to time, despite any outdated hairstyles and fashion. Designing Women is a great sitcom. The first season–which aired during 1986-1987–capitalizes on the leading ladies’ charm and chemistry. Sure, the clothes may give away the era, but the dialogue is consistently whip-smart and funny. Julia Sugarbaker (Dixie Carter) owns an Atlanta interior design firm. She is a proper, well-mannered lady, but if you get on her bad side, watch out: Her words cut through like a knife, as evidenced in an episode where a clueless man thinks Julia and her friends might be flattered by his unwanted attention. Julia’s sister Suzanne Sugarbaker (Delta Burke) is the polar opposite of her feminist sister. A former beauty queen, Suzanne has been married and divorced more than a handful of times. Though shallow and blunt, Suzanne also has a heart of gold when it comes to things that really matter–like friends and family. Mary Jo Shively (Annie Potts) is their petite, red-headed colleague. Divorced from a doctor who she put through med school, Mary Jo isn’t sure how to navigate life as a single mom. Then there’s Charlene Frazier (Jean Smart), whom Suzanne once referred to as a “big old donkey girl.” Naïve and hopeful, Charlene sees the good in everyone–even Suzanne. The beauty of Designing Women is that while somes of the plotlines revolve around each character’s insecurity, the writers also tap into what the women really want–even if they aren’t aware of it. For instance, Suzanne volunteers to foster a child whose adoptive parents can’t take her for a month. Never mind that this isn’t the way foster parents or adoption works. The way Suzanne fusses over the little girl–even allowing Li Sing to wear one of her prized tiaras to bed–is as touching as it is funny. Meanwhile, Julia has a difficult time watching her 19-year-old son engage in a romance with a woman her own age. This season also tackles sexual harassment, racism, and cancer. There are some ridiculous premises–such as Charlene’s being involved with a possible escaped criminal and Suzanne being worried that her maid cast a voodoo spell over her. But overall, Designing Women still manages to make viewers laugh, think, and even cry a bit. –Jae-Ha Kim
