Fashion Babylon

Product Description
CAUTION: Reading this book will forever change the way you peruse the racks at Bergdorf’s or flip through the pages of Vogue.

Taking the reader through six months in a designer’s life, Fashion Babylon follows an anonymous A-list British fashion designer looking to break out across the pond. Structured around three of the annual “must” industry events, this irresistible work of reportage goes inside the well-cut seams of the fashion world, where women are paid tens of thousands of dollars for simply getting dressed and where a wrong skirt length can cost you your career. You’ll find out how a collection is put together — from the objects of inspiration to the catwalk, into the shops and, hopefully, onto the cover of a magazine — and learn who goes to the shows and where they sit…and whose backside they have to kiss to get there.

Witty, naughty and jam-packed with celebrity gossip, Fashion Babylon decodes the markups and the comedowns, the fabulous extremes and the shoddy shortcuts behind one of the most lucrative and secretive businesses in the world.

Mildly entertaining, however I wish that the protagonist could say more than “What?”, “Sorry?” “Um….”, repeat the last word said, or stare blankly at the fashion team for the answer to the latest dilemma/fashion question/business decision. Is this designer really supposed to be the head of a company?

Fun, gossipy, entertaining and full of useful info regarding the fashion industry and behind the scenes action, that unless you are actually part of the industry, would be pretty much clueless how it all works. Really enjoyed this from a non-fashionista perspective.

  • I really enjoyed this book. I just finished it about 3 minutes ago. Her writing was informative, yet comical. I found myself laughing out loud in some cases. Alexander was great, I loved all the gossip and behind-the-scenes stories. So fun.

My only complaint was the redundancies of fashion cliches. Every chapter had someone getting hammered, doing a line of coke, SMOKING, or blah blah blah. I actually found it quite annoying. It seemed to be gl;amortized, which I thought was quite irresponsible and frankly, pathetic.

On a lighter note, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in fashion. However, you’ll find yourself wondering who the heck this “Anonymous” designer is. It drove me crazy.

  • This story is a peak behind the scenes of the fashion industry. It mixes real events and people with fictionalized characters to make the story flow as smoothly as a Prada silk dress. Fashionistas will recognize every step on the story year.
