Product Description
The only complete guide to every street market and market district in Paris, with beautiful full color photographs throughout

Perhaps the most pleasurable way for any visitor to feel at home in Paris–and one of the easiest ways to get to know the city–is to meander through any of its dozens of street markets. It’s also the best way to find a wide variety of uniquely French gifts–from antique books and botanical prints to flea market finds and household goods–not to mention legendary cheeses, produce, and bounty of the French countryside.

The authors have explored and described every market in every neighborhood. They also have included streets that are devoted to selling one type of thing–from the centuries-old booksellers along the Seine to those lined with stores selling items as varied as fabric and discounted designer clothing.

And, for everyone who feels their time in the city is all too short, they have suggested itineraries based on the opening days of the markets with local restaurant recommendations.

Also included are tips, translations of important phrases, and pointers on what to look for so that the visitor will be able to make the most of this exhilarating and fun French experience.

All the market information is supplemented by sidebars that round out the experience, including a listing of favorite wine bars, a visit to the wood oven in the cellar of the famous bakery Poilane, and strolls down the best shopping streets in Paris.

  • I thought it would be like the Markets of Provence; instead it was more a guide to fleamarkets which I would never go to in the first place. Not as expected.

  • A beautifully designed book that leaves you wondering where are these markets and how do you get there. A kind of fundamental problem if it was intended as a guide book. There are better sources on the market in the form of the normal guide books or on the web.

  • the basic info is in this little book, and the colorful photo illustrations will surely inspire visitors to paris to become market hoppers—-one of the delightful and FREE diversions that too many tourists overlook. my quibble is with the format: it’s too chunky, and i would find it awkward to carry in my pocket. and the binding “fights” the user who might want to skim it while walking, for instance. a bolder type face would have helped, and why no maps?? all things considered, including the competition—see the generous bibliography— three stars is a generous rating.

  • Karen Ford says:

Even if you live in Paris, this book is an effective guide to the many markets of Paris. The book is quite honest about what markets to skip while giving them their due in the whole scheme of Paris life. It’s small size is ideal to tote around and read while sitting at a cafe.

  • When the book was purchased, I thought it would be a larger format book- whereas it is a pocket book size. This meant that there was less information that I had expected. I also did not find the specific market at Maubert Mutualite that I had expected to find – it talked of a food market in Maubert, but not the antiques market I had visited in 2005. Overall the book is quite useful, and it is well written with tricks and tips abounding.
